Kevin Burke & Cal Scott“The Irish Session Suite” (Traditional Music arranged for String Quartet)

The main feature of this special concert will be a Preview Performance of “The Irish Session Suite” a new, never before performed work, consisting of ten traditional tunes arranged in four movements for String Quartet. Kevin Burke’s fiddle will lead the traditional tunes through Cal Scott’s beautifully scored arrangements played by some of the Northwest’s finest musicians - Andrew Ehrlich, violin, Concertmaster of the Portland Chamber Orchestra; Mattie Kaiser, viola, founder of the group Classical Revolution PDX and Justin Kagan, cello, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and currently owner of Badbeard’s Microroastery Coffee Company.

Kevin and Cal will also be playing additional pieces from their current concert repertoire.

Since the early 1970s Kevin Burke has been a well-known figure in the Irish music world. His thirty years of recordings and performances have made him a highly influential figure both as a soloist and as a member of such esteemed groups as the Bothy Band, Patrick Street and The Celtic Fiddle Festival, as well as with artists as diverse as Arlo Guthrie and Tim O’Brien. In 2002 Kevin was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship (the nation’s most prestigious award for excellence in Traditional Arts) in acknowledgement of his contribution to traditional music.

Cal Scott is a native Oregonian who has played in folk, rock and jazz ensembles for three decades. He has recorded and produced over twenty CDs including nine with The Trail Band, an eight-piece American Roots folk group. Cal is also a composer for film having scored over forty documentaries for PBS.

Kevin and Cal released their first CD, “Across the Black River” in 2007. This highly acclaimed recording was hailed by THE NEW YORK TIMES as “One of the top world music releases of the year...” Several other prestigious publications contributed to the glowing reviews including THE WASHINGTON POST - “ Impressive new album … spellbinding … graceful …. sings out with a confidence that allows the listener to relax” and THE IRISH TIMES - “A masterclass in finesse …. a gorgeous, swinging collection. Spine-tingling effervescence.”

“The Irish Session Suite” is the latest challenging project from this exceptionally talented duo. It could easily prove to be one of the decade’s most exciting and intriguing musical collaborations and has been made possible by a grant from RACC.
